We designed an existing character, a new costume based on what colors represent. I chose to design a new dress for Amber from Hairspray. Yellow represents her energy and the red represents her evil girl character. I created a color pallet before I started drawing. I wanted to use light creme color because white represent purity and I think Amber has a part of her where she's sheltered and doesn't know anything. I looked up some 60's teenager dress for images and background information about popular dresses at the time period. There were 2 type, the poofy big dress, and the simple dress with sleeves and a collar. I chose to design a flattering dress because Amber is the daughter of Velma who dresses rich. Putting small flowers on the dress was popular, but I choose not to do that because I thought it would be better if I kept it simple and bright to utilize the colors. |

During the 1930s, when “You can’t take it with you” was set, women wore midi-length bias-cut dresses, puff sleeves, belted waists and large yokes or collars, Slouch hats, tilt hats, knit berets. Men wore wide, padded shoulders, tapering sleeves, peaked lapels, and V-shaped neck. First impressions of characters Penelope- She is calm but doesn’t have the same brain as others. Essie- She is a little stupid but a nice girl. Rheba- A wondrous person to be a maid. Ed- Maybe in his second childhood? Alice- Cute character, like walking on clouds. We designed a costume for a character from “You Can’t Take It With You.” I created 2 costumes for Alice Sycamore, who is 22, and she’s fresh, in love with Tony, Merciful, and polite. One is an evening dress, and the other is a house dress. I designed a simple blue evening dress with bead flowers. Blue is a representation of trust and confidence. In the 1930s, evening dresses were long, sleeky, hugged every curve of the body to show the feminine silhouette, had light flowing fabric, and sexy, but modesty was important. When I was looking through the images of evening dresses, I got the expression of having a simple front, but a fancy back and a lot of the dresses had an open end. I made the dress simple as possible but elegant and pretty in the back. The house dress in the 1930s was the most casual dress a woman could wear at the house and with her family. Hooverts were the most common house dresses where they wrap the fabric around their body to form a skirt. They were hand made from leftover materials, and often had pockets for the efficiency of housework. I chose to have a flower print because they used to have bright, bold prints on their dresses. A red dress with blue flowers was a typical pattern. Dresses overall had flattering skirts but fitting hip, puffy or fluttery sleeves, high waist, and a collar with laces. I chose the reddish-pink to show the femininity of a dreamy girl, and include white to represent the purity and youngness. URL: https://vintagedancer.com/1930s/ , Access Feb 12th

We had a project of designing a costume for all the characters in the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. My Romeo and Juliet will be set in Japan in the 1850s. I chose this setting because compared to England in the 1850s, Japan was very poor. It would be a good way to show the difference of wealthiness between the Montagues and the Capulets.Romeo’s family will be the middle-class Japanese citizen who owned the wheat field. Juliet’s family is a wealthy English family who comes to Japan. This is based on a war called the Satsuei war in 1863 when the Japanese attacked 3 English who destroyed the wheat field, and as an act of revenge, the English attacked the Japanese and became a war. Romeo’s family will wear costumes of low-class Japanese workers in a blue color pallet. Juliet’s will wear costumes of the Victorians with a red color pallet. I chose to set the play in Japan because I wanted to do something very different and to take advantage of my identity. I also think Japanese items of clothing are interesting and beautiful. I also wanted to include another type of clothing culture from other countries than Japan. I chose England because clothes in England are very elegant and eye-catching especially in the Victorian era. I love how they have many different rules and uses of the costume to express their class and condition of life.
